CS 410 Top: Sensor Networks

Credit Hours: 4
Course Coordinator: N/A
Course Description: We will study the new field of sensor networking using research papers as the primary reading material. The classes will be lecture oriented with me giving all the lectures. There will be 2 exams and several written assignments. The topics we will cover include applications of sensor networks, MAC design, energy efficiency issues, routing and transport protocols for these networks, and some security issues. I expect students to have taken a networking class so that I do not have to explain the various terms used above. Some papers also involve matehmatical derivations using probabilities etc., I expect students to be able to follow along. Otherwise, it should be a fun class describing some new emerging technology.
Prerequisites:
Goals: Upon the successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Describe and design applications of sensor networks.
  2. Identify MAC layer issues and define solutions.
  3. Identify routing layer challenges and describe existing solutions.
  4. Determine transport layer issues.
  5. Evaluate the deployment of sensor networks.
  6. Identify challenges in programming sensor networks.
