CS 410 Top: Information Integration

Credit Hours: 4
Course Coordinator: N/A
Course Description: This course will consider scenarios that can benefit from information integration, including traditional database integration where the goal is to construct a global schema that describes a set of local databases. We will study the steps required for integration of structured information -- for instance, data model, schema, and data issues -- as well as new techniques based on semi-structured models like XML or RDF. The goal of the course is to collect, investigate, classify, and synthesize techniques used in various kinds of information integration. Students will identify key publications related to integrating data; compare their assumptions, methodology, and applicability; and present their findings to the class regularly, perhaps on a weekly basis. Other deliverables may include annotated bibliographies, detailed examples to illustrate a particular integration technique, and short papers.
Prerequisites: CS 386 or CS 586 or equivalent class offering an introduction to database management systems. Motivated undergraduate students who would like to take this class should talk to one of the instructors.
