The Network Lab is located in the FAB building in room 135-02. It is intended for approved student projects, and network or security research under the direction of Jim Binkley, Suresh Singh, and for MCECS IT training under David Burns and Janaka Jayawardena. The current thrust of the lab has been towards master's projects and for training IT network engineers. Example projects might include device drivers, wireless and network protocol design, and network management projects. Training may include Cisco router and switch training, as well as host network setup for various kinds of network-related services. The lab currently has 7 Cisco routers, three Cisco switches, two Intel switches, one Packet Engines switch, and 10 (or so) host boxes running FreeBSD and Linux. There is also a certain amount of 802.11 wireless equipment, including an IPAQ, laptops, and an Access Point or two. The netlab is hooked up via a 1 gigabit ethernet port to the PSU backbone, which allows the lab to take part in Portland local and inter-university high-speed Internet infrastructure projects.
