Some meta-syllabus info for the 1st day. 1. this class is a distance learning class. It has a remote site local site. We need to understand that is not a normal class. How we handle the remote class is non-trivial. We need a disciplined student body on both sides to deal with problems. 2. what I need from you: local class We need to minimize disruption. This is "show-biz". 1. please get here on time. 2. please avoid smelly food stuffs (pizza ...). 3. we need a local question protocol. In the DLC, the local mikes are push to send. In NH, they don't appear to be. I will try to repeat all questions. Please remind me when I forget. 3. remote class issues 0. psu side - recognize remote class exists. 1. tests. I may decide to give the tests at PSU physically and require attendance at PSU. This will depend on my TA's situation. Haven't decided yet. More later. 2. I will need help bringing papers to/from the remote class. This is why email submissions of assignments is so important. Shar ... learn how to use it. zip is ok. gzip tar is ok. but test it. make an archive of some files and mail them to yourself. OK to test with me too. 3. remote check-in issue. You need to ask questions and not be afraid of doing so. This is a known hard problem. Consider picking a person who is not shy to ask questions, and hand that person a question on a piece of paper to ask me. Please try not to disrupt me when I am fully involved on some topic. Wait until I go to the next slide. Moving to the next slide is always a good time to ask for questions. I should periodically ask for any questions in the class too. Remind me to do that if I forget. 4. IMPORTANT. If the ip/tv system goes down, wait 10 minutes for it to come back home, and then leave. I will keep lecturing at PSU. How to make it: There are 4 sources: You can probably get tapes from OCATE, and/or view the class from the psu media site or the OCATE media site. 5. speak up when you ask a question. It's probably a good idea to say: Question?! loudly to get my attention, and then ask the question. 4. Two help mechanisms for us: email and the PSU media server. 1. questions: use the class mailing list: join it asap. announcements/questions, whatever. Majordomo list: tcpip@cs.pdx.edu DO NOT MAIL YOUR ASSIGNMENT/S TO tcpip@cs.pdx.edu (do mail them to jrb@cs.pdx.edu) 2. Watch the class again. You can watch a recorded version of the class from PSU and/or OCATE. You can get tapes of the class from the Millar library, and possibly from OCATE too. Learn how to use the streaming media server at PSU. You can review or make up a class virtually. PSU info: tapes at Millar. (http://www.lib.pdx.edu) streaming media server at: www.media.pdx.edu password is f00ledyou (two zeros). Microsoft media player. OCATE info: media server is: http://www.ocate.edu/tvservices/tv_courses.htm logon and password is binkleyjim unixoperator ocate is using real player. 5. textbooks. Findable at the psu bookstore (or Powell's). I put two copies of Stevens, TCP/IP illustrated on reserve, and one copy of the net. programming book on reserve at the Millar lib.
