Portland State University Sensor Networks Exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
Overview
We have created an interactive educational demonstration on sensor networks
at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland, Oregon. It was active during
2007-08. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is a wonderful
institution whose goal is to introduce K-12 students to the magic and potential of science and engineering.
Museum visitors are given an active low-powered Crossbow sensor mote to carry
with them. The motes are tracked using active environmental
beacons embedded in the environment. They report physical measurements
of the environment such as light, temperature and sound, which are relayed to a base-station via a multi-hop network, and
promptly displayed on an LCD panel.
This exhibit was sponsored by the National Science Foundation through their
Broadening Participation in Computing and Research Experiences for Undergraduates programs. Supplementary funding was provided through an NSF CAREER award.
