Winter Quarter Topics
This term we turn from the cyborg topic of machines and intelligence, to the topic of
the interaction between science and society. In our
study we will focus on the biological aspects of the
cyborg, and the question "Can we (or should we) create artificial life?"
Topics we'll cover
- How do scientists work. The social contract, the scientific method.
- Genetic Engineering
- Read the novel "Oryx an Crake" by Margaret Atwood
- The luddites
- Science and Ethics
- "Do it yourself Biology"
- Equal opportunity and the sciences
Major asignments
- Research Paper (in 4 or 5 parts). (25%)
- Several 1 page writing assignments. (15 %)
- A group based performance project. (15 %)
- A statistics project. (10 %)
- An final term project (Along the lines of the mini-portfoilio) (10 %)
- Many participation activities, worksheets, quizes, etc. (25%)
