Title:
ITR: RESCUENET - Embedded In-Building Sensor Network to Assist Disaster Rescue
When buildings collapse, the primary
challenge facing
rescuers is determining the interior structure as well as location of survivors. We examine the potential of using UWB
radios and Ultrasonic
sensors to map the interior.
(1) Build a database of UWB
propagation measurements in various types of rubble. (2) Develop more precise
algorithms for locationing using UWB in rubble. (3) Algorithms for combining
UWB propagation measurements and ultrasonic soundings to create a 3D map of
the interior of the collapse. (4) MAC design for use with UWB in such
environments.
(1) Database of UWB propagation in a
variety of collapse scenarios allowing other teams to participate in this
research area. (2) Training graduate students in two disciplines – CS
(networking, sensors) and EE (signal propagation, measurement, UWB).
Using new UWB radios have begun calibrating the testbed as a first step to collect
signal propagation data.
New MAC for use with UWB (low data rate, highly energy efficient).
